Jeff Smith - vigilante biker? you decideA vigilante motorcyclist has revealed how he rides dead on the speed limit, films bikers who overtake and hands the footage to police.

Riding instructor Jeff Smith uses a helmet-mounted camera to film continuously for up to three hours while riding his ex-police Honda Pan European.

The 62-year-old from Southampton said: “I record all the idiots that, while I’m doing the normal correct speed, are flying past at 80 or 90mph.

“If someone overtakes at a bit extra speed in a 30mph zone, I would also report them because they shouldn’t be doing it.

“I know various police officers. I just download the film onto a DVD and give them a disc and it’s down to them what they do.

“I estimate people’s speeds, pass film on to police and it’s down to them whether they catch them next time.”

Oddball Smith, who claims to never break the speed limit, believes his efforts are necessary to tackle a plague of irresponsible riding. He said: “As you will appreciate, it’s mainly because we get a lot of re-born bikers at the moment.

“I met one recently who said: ‘I only passed my test two months ago and I’ve bought an R1.’ I said: ‘You’re a bloody idiot. Did you go back to your training school and ask them to teach you how to ride it?’”

The former courier isn’t sure whether anyone has been charged based on his evidence but hopes his efforts have led police to target motorcyclists more. “I know the police do act,” he said. “Yesterday at a local bike meet we had the roads policing unit there. Every weekend now Hampshire Police are out all over and so is East Sussex when we come into their area, which is good.”

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Police was unaware of Smith’s actions. Asked what the force would with his footage, she said: “We would look at it.”

This article has been shamelessly taken from MCN, the reason being that the more exposure this idiot gets on the web, the more likely he will come across a normal biker that is prepared to give him a peice of their mind. This countries roads are clogged because of unneccesary excessively tight speed limits on the wrong roads.

While we at BikerHolic do not condone breaking the nations speed limits, I for one don’t consider my speedometer the overriding priority when out riding, for me, what is happening on the road in front of me is.

Idiots like Jeff Smith do nothing to promote safer riding and he is a disgrace to the British biking community. There are always going to be self righteous pricks like this who think that their own views are correct all of the time.

Do yourself a favour Jeff Smith, quit biking and get a bus pass before someone enforces that for you - you self righteous asshole.

By all means air your views, the more comments this article gets the better.

this guy is an idiot, what gives him the right to estimate peoples speed and judge them to be speeding? what is this going to do to his training business? with a bit of luck nobody will do their training with him knowing hiss attitude, and that comment about hoping his film will get plod to target bikes more, as if they need any encouragement, he should be locked up for his own safety

    ……………..Sam

    Everybody breaks the speed limits…

Its a fact of life, and i think he is a total jackass for reporting fellow bikers.

People like him give biking a bad name.

I bet he’s popular at the local bike meets!

May I suggest that he should attend to his own riding rather than that of other people. Whilst he is busy attending to what other riders are doing, and thinking about the shots his camera is taking, surely he can’t be giving his full attention to his own riding. ‘Due care and attention’ spring to mind.

I’m sure Mr Do-Gooder would be much better using his energy to campaign on behalf of better training standards, MAG or the BMF. Somehow I get the feeling he isn’t where he wanted to be in life and thinks he’s making up for it. Maybe the local plod solo’s would let him clean their bikes, a much better use of his time :)

I suggest that bikers who live in this idiot’s vicinity follow him and film him. In fact, someone who lives in his area should film his every move. I bet he has a dark secret that would show this sanctimonious twat for what he is.

As for his supposition that you can’t ride an R1 straight after passing your test, it’s utter poppycock. I went straight onto an Aprilia Futura RST1000 when I passed my test in 2004. I now have a BMW K1200S. The throttle goes both ways and just because you have just passed doesn’t mean you don’t have the requisite skills or commonsense to ride a 1000cc bike. I had driven for 23 years before I took my bike licence.

Who would attend his riding school anyway? The guy was a courier who wished he was a copper but he probably failed the entry exam because he couldn’t spell his name! I bet he hasn’t got any friends nor ever had a girlfriend!

Just spotted the sanctimonious twat isn’t wearing safety gear nor gloves in the photo. He also lives in a choice neighbourhood. Perhaps he’s jealous of those who can afford safety gear and better bikes? As for his screen which should be free of clutter and stickers, that looks rather unsafe to me. When he raises it, how can he see through it? I think he should be reported for having an unsafe screen.

Additionally, isn’t it an offence to add a camera to a helmet, surely? Surely it endangers the motorcyclist’s life by causing a protrusion which would concentrate the force in a localised area if he banged his head?
