I bought a new, BMW R1200GS in December 2006 . This model suffered reliability problems that I did not expect of BMW. On my own bike a gearbox seal failed allowing oil onto the clutch. Repaired under guarantee, Yes, but that is not the point. Even moderate quality control should have avoided this happening. Apparently there have been other gearbox problems as well although I personally have not had any.

I understand the braking system is suspect. Some control units have failed and have needed replacing. Cost, £1,000 each! A highly experienced service manager said the system was a bad one and should never have been fitted to any motorcycle, let alone a BMW.

So what is going on here? My bike has only covered 12K careful miles so far, but what else is likely to break or fall apart and cost a mint to repair?

I am considering upgrading to the latest OHC 1200 GS, or this time maybe try an R1200RT. But is BMW quality control now up to Honda standards yet? What is likely to break or fail on the latest OHC R1200 models?

Last thought. If I upgrade to a new GS or RT, my son would like to buy my 12,000 mile GS to replace his older faultless and trouble free Honda Transalp. Should I let him, or is he likely to be saddled with a hefty repair bill before many months have passed?

OK. So you asked me to speak my mind. I have! It is now 2010 and I am worried about BMW reliability. Surely we should be able to buy a top of the range motorcycle without a second thought for reliability. I would expect at least 50,000 miles of trouble free motorcycling as a minimum!

A good friend of mine has competed 90,000 miles on his 100cc Peugeot scooter which he has "caned and flogged" daily since new. It has never let him down. The engine has not been touched apart from normal servicing. Yes, it rattles a bit now, but after 90,000 miles this tiny machine has a right to. He could get a new one for not much more than £1,000!

Now what are YOU thinking?

Best wishes,

Jim.

Of course its cut and pasted - its an official release, for information purposes. Not something you can actually do a report on until it's actually happened is it?

I just turned in my 2007 XL1200C for a 2009 DFXF Fat Bob. What a great ride. Much more bike for the freeways. Extra weight and power makes this bike as much fun as the Sportster.
